The Two Numbers Behind Every Notary Bill

Number 1: The notarization fee — capped by state law

California Government Code §8211 sets hard maximums on what any notary can charge per notarial act. These apply to everyone — the UPS Store on Alameda, the bank on Spring Street, and every mobile notary in the city.

Two things people consistently get wrong:

The acknowledgment fee is per signature, not per document. A grant deed with three signers is three separate notarial acts — up to $45, not $15.

There's no separate charge for the seal. It's built into the act fee. Anyone itemizing a "stamp fee" is charging you for something that isn't a service.

Number 2: The travel fee

California places no cap on travel fees. Notaries set their own. The only legal requirement is that they disclose it before traveling.

Loan Signings Are Priced Separately

Loan signing packages work differently. These run $150 to $300 as a flat fee covering the full appointment — typically 100+ pages, document printing, the signing itself, scan-backs to the lender, and shipping.

In most transactions, the title or escrow company pays this as part of closing costs, not the borrower directly.

What Should Never Be on Your Bill

Fees for veterans' benefits documents. California law requires these notarizations to be provided free of charge. We honor this without exception.
